The Study: Running vs. Antidepressants

Over 16 weeks, researchers compared outcomes between patients taking SSRI drugs (common antidepressants) and those participating in running-based therapy. The results were remarkable: approximately 44% of people in both groups showed improvement. However, the running group experienced additional benefits. Not only did they see improvements in weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and heart function, but they also outperformed the antidepressant group in these measures.

  1. Consistency Beats Intensity: It’s not about running marathons; even short jogs can have huge benefits. Running just 5–10 minutes a day has been shown to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality. 

  2. Community Connection: Social fitness is the secret sauce. Run clubs provide the push needed for consistency. When you’re part of a group, you’re more likely to stick to your fitness routine. 

  3. Health Gains: Running improves resting heart rate, VO2 max, cholesterol levels, and many other health benefits.
